Submerged narratives - a conversation with Mirela Stoeac-Vladuti and Kristin Bergaust

The project Eco-cultural Tides (Submerged Narratives of the Danube and Oslo Fjord) is a fascinating cross-disciplinary initiative that brings together artistic and scientific exploration, linking two distinct aquatic ecosystems—the Danube River and the Oslo Fjord—through creative collaboration. The project reflects the interplay of environmental, cultural, and historical narratives embedded in these water bodies.

Curator Mirela Stoeac-Vladuti, director of META spatiu in Timișoara, and artist-researcher Kristin Bergaust from OsloMet have joined forces to bridge the artistic and scientific approaches of the project. Their collaboration emphasizes the importance of cross-cultural dialogue and interdisciplinary research in addressing ecological and socio-cultural themes. The resulting exhibition, to be hosted at META spatiu, will reflect this shared vision by integrating a variety of media and perspectives.

The project involves a team of artists with diverse practices:

• Marina Oprea

• Cosmin Haias

• Kristin Bergaust

• Alexis Parra

• Alex Mirutziu

These artists will contribute through their unique methodologies, blending creative expression with environmental research to narrate submerged stories of the Danube and Oslo Fjord. The project positions art as a mediator between ecological concerns and cultural heritage, creating a platform for a deeper understanding of these two ecosystems.

Key themes of the project include:

1. Submerged Narratives: Exploring untold stories and histories linked to the Danube and Oslo Fjord.

2. Eco-Cultural Intersections: Highlighting the interconnectedness of natural environments and human activities.

3. Art and Science: Combining creative and academic inquiry to foster innovative perspectives on sustainability and preservation.

The exhibition at META spatiu will serve as the culmination of this interdisciplinary exchange, offering visitors a space to engage with the submerged narratives and eco-cultural dialogues that define these unique waterways.
