Beyond the New Fair struggle

Visiting Land of Fire exhibition at Kunsthalle Bega

The Land of Fire exhibition, curated by Cosmin Costinaș, Mona Vătămanu, and Florin Tudor, explores often-overlooked aspects of Romania’s colonial history, sparking conversations about memory, accountability, and national identity. Rather than offering a linear narrative, the exhibition weaves together diverse perspectives to examine themes of resistance, complicity, and community. It sheds light on critical issues such as the exploitation of Romani people, the struggles in Transnistria, and Romania’s colonial legacy. Moreover, the exhibition challenges viewers to reflect on the evolving dynamics of white supremacy, patriarchy, and “European ideals,” offering a platform to reconsider Romania’s history and its continuing impact on national identity.
